8 kwietnia 1978 roku w salach Muzeum Narodowego krakowskich Sukiennic odbyła się uroczystość wręczenia Tadeuszowi Kantorowi Nagrody im. Rembrandta przyznanej przez Fundację Goethego z Bazylei. W czasie uroczystości artysta po raz pierwszy odczytał swój Mały Manifest.

Na zwieńczenie wieczoru, w Galerii Krzysztofory zagrano Umarłą klasę.

On the 8th April 1978 in the halls of National Museum in Krakow’s Sukiennice, Tadeusz Kantor was awarded the Rembrandt Award bestowed by the Goethe foundation in Basel. During the ceremony, the artist read his Little Manifesto for the first time. It read:

It’s not true that the MODERN man is a mind who has overcome fear. Don’t believe it! Fear exists. Fear of the outside world, fear of fate, of death, of the unknown, of nothingness, of the void.

It’s not true that the artist is a hero and a fearless conqueror, as conventional wisdom wold have it.

Believe me, the artist is a poor man and he is helpless, for he has placed himself against fear.
